Study a lot “The Chronicle of Caine,” “The Chronicle of Shadows,” and “The Chronicle of Secrets,” which tell the story of Caine’s curse, the founding of the clans, and the laws of the Kindred (vampires).
In Vampire: The Masquerade (World of Darkness), Caine (the first vampire) did not directly found the vampire clans. Instead, he created three members of the Second Generation. These second-generation vampires then created the Third Generation (the Antediluvians), who survived a biblical flood to establish the 13 major Clans.
Caine’s role in the lineage of the clans involves a sequence of specific mythical events, as detailed in the Book of Nod:
1. Caine’s Rule and the Second Generation
After being cursed by God, Caine wandered the earth, found a mortal settlement, and founded the First City of Enoch. Wanting companions, he Embraced the three vampires of the Second Generation:
- Enoch: The ruler and namesake of the First City.
- Irad: The “Strong” one who acted as his warrior.
- Zillah: The “Beautiful” one.
2. The Embrace of the Third Generation
Caine ordered his progeny to stop creating new vampires to avoid spreading his curse. However, his three childer disobeyed him, embracing the Third Generation—also known as the Antediluvians. It is these thirteen Antediluvians who became the individual progenitors and founders of the 13 traditional clans.
3. The Deluge and the Clans
God, displeased with the thriving vampire society, sent a great flood to destroy the First City. Caine abandoned the city and went into self-exile, leaving his childer and grandchilder to fend for themselves.
During the chaos, the ambitious Third Generation rose up and diablerized (consumed) their elders—the Second Generation.
4. Caine’s Curse on the Founders
Upon learning that his childer were dead, Caine hunted down the surviving members of the Third Generation. Rather than completely destroying them, he cursed each of the Antediluvians and their descendants with unique clan weaknesses and bans (e.g., the Nosferatu’s grotesque appearance or the Gangrel’s beast-like changes). The Antediluvians then fled and went on to establish the 13 clans of the Kindred.
The 13 Clans of the Kindred in Vampire: The Masquerade represent mythical bloodlines stemming from Antediluvian progenitors. They are divided into three main factions—the Camarilla, the Sabbat, and the Independents—each characterized by unique disciplines, innate curses (banes), and distinct societal roles:
- Banu Haqim (Assamite): The Judges. Masters of assassination and blood sorcery, formerly based in Alamut.
- Brujah: The Rabble. Passionate scholars, poets, and rebels with a ferocious inclination toward frenzy.
- Gangrel: The Ferals. Nomadic, bestial vampires who shape-shift and live in harmony with nature.
- Hecata (formerly Giovanni & Cappadocian): The Clan of Death. An insular, mafia-like family of necromancers who deal in the occult and global finances.
- Lasombra: The Magisters. Ruthless nobles who command the literal essence of shadows and darkness.
- Malkavian: The Oracles. A clan irreversibly fractured by a shared, supernatural madness that grants them uncanny insights.
- The Ministry (Followers of Set): The Serpents. Followers of the Egyptian god Set who traffic in temptation, vice, and forbidden lore.
- Nosferatu: The Sewer Rats. Hideously deformed information brokers who dwell in the shadows and underground networks.
- Ravnos: The Daredevils. Wandering illusionists, tricksters, and nomads prone to heavy vices.
- Salubri: The Cyclops. An incredibly rare, empathetic clan of healers and demon hunters, historically hunted by the Tremere.
- Toreador: The Degenerates/Artists. Emotion-driven, glamorous vampires utterly enraptured by art, beauty, and humanity.
- Tremere: The Usurpers. Warlocks who practice blood sorcery (Thaumaturgy), originally a mortal house that achieved vampirism.
- Tzimisce: The Fiends. Demonic flesh-sculpting lords of the Old World who practice Vicissitude and guard their domains fiercely.
- Ventrue: The Kindred. The aristocratic leaders, politicians, and rulers of vampire society who only feed on specific resonances.
The Camarilla operates as a rigid, feudal gerontocracy designed to preserve the masquerade and protect older vampires. Conversely, the Sabbat functions as a centralized, fanatical military cult. The former relies on established traditions, legalism, and hidden influence over humanity; the latter operates on radical freedom from human morality, enforced through blood-bonded unity and violent crusades.
The Camarilla (The Ivory Tower)
The Camarilla’s political structure is highly localized, with individual cities governed as independent feudal domains.
- The Prince: The autocratic ruler of a domain who holds the power of life and death over all local vampires. They interpret and enforce the sect’s laws, known as the Six Traditions.
- Primogen: A council of powerful elders representing the major clans. They advise the Prince and check their power; if ignored, a united Primogen can easily topple a ruler.
- The Sheriff & Scourge: The Sheriff serves as the Prince’s enforcer, investigating breaches of law, while the Scourge is tasked with eliminating unauthorized or ‘thin-blooded’ vampires.
- Global Authority: The sect is overseen at the macro-level by an Inner Circle of clan founders. They dispatch Justicars to enforce laws across whole regions, supported by elite enforcers known as Archons.
The Sabbat (The Sword of Caine)
The Sabbat rejects generational feudalism and human morality, believing vampires are apex predators destined to rule humanity openly. Their hierarchy balances strict central command with decentralized, autonomous militant cells.
- The Regent: The supreme, autocratic leader of the sect, operating out of a central stronghold, traditionally in Mexico City. The Regent’s word is law, and they answer to no one.
- Archbishops & Bishops: Localized territorial governors who oversee Sabbat-controlled cities. They hold secular and spiritual power, answering directly to the Regent.
- Packs, Ducti, & Priests: The basic building blocks of the Sabbat are packs rather than individual vampires. Each pack is led by a Ductus (tactical commander) and advised by a Priest (spiritual leader) who ensures the pack follows their inhuman philosophical “Path of Enlightenment”.
- The Vinculum: A supernatural blood tie created through sect-wide rituals. This forces absolute loyalty to the pack and the Sabbat cause, superseding the traditional vampire-sire hierarchy.
- The Black Hand: An elite, secretive military branch of the sect that acts as an internal intelligence and elite strike force.
