The NEOM project is a massive, multi-trillion-dollar futuristic megacity currently under development in Saudi Arabia. Launched in 2017 as the centerpiece of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030initiative, it aims to diversify the nation’s economy away from oil and establish a hub for advanced tech, sustainability, and tourism. [1, 2, 3]

The Key Regions

• The Line: A highly ambitious 170-kilometer-long, car-free linear smart city housed within two parallel 500-meter-tall mirrored skyscrapers. While initially pitched to hold 9 million people, the scope has been significantly scaled back and re-envisioned amid rising costs and feasibility challenges. [1, 2, 3]
• Trojena: An upcoming mountain tourism destination designed to feature outdoor skiing, a man-made freshwater lake, and luxury residential villages. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Current Status & Vision Shift

While construction of the development’s foundational infrastructure and excavation works are heavily underway, the global timeline for The Line has been significantly delayed. Facing cost overruns, Saudi Arabia has shifted some of its focus, reworking the design of the project and exploring the potential to utilize the zone as a major hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers rather than solely as a residential mega-city. [1, 2, 3]
