What “we created”….

Enki and Enlil are two central, often opposing, deities in ancient Mesopotamian mythology (Sumerian, Akkadian, Babylonian). Enlil, the “Lord of the Air,” was the leader of the high council, overseeing human destiny. Enki, the “Lord of the Earth” and water, was a compassionate deity of wisdom and magic who championed humanity. [123]

Key Differences and Relationship:

  • Roles: Enlil was seen as the stern leader and top authority who managed the cosmos. Enki (also known as Ea in Akkadian) was the intelligent, tricky creator who introduced arts and civilization.
  • Conflict: Enlil often deemed humans, with their noise and rebellion, unworthy, even sending the Great Flood in many stories.
  • Protection: Enki was nurturing and compassionate, creating humans as workers and often protecting them from Enlil’s wrath, notably warning Ziusudra (the Sumerian Noah) of the flood.
  • Symbolism: Enlil represents absolute, often harsh divine authority, while Enki represents divine wisdom, fertility, and the nurturing of creation. [12345]

They were both sons of An (Anu), the sky god, though from different mothers. Their relationship, filled with rivalry, shaped many myths about the creation of humanity and the regulation of the world. [12345]
