Many names are combined with Yahweh or El to describe specific actions, such as Jehovah-Jireh (The Lord Will Provide), Jehovah-Rapha (The Lord Who Heals), and Jehovah-Shalom (The Lord Is Peace).

There are several foundational names frequently used in the Bible to describe God’s power and relationship with humanity, including Elohim (Creator/Mighty God), Adonai (Lord/Master), and El Shaddai (God Almighty).

The primary personal name of God in the Hebrew Bible is the Tetragrammaton, YHWH (or יהוה). It is typically rendered as “Yahweh” or “Jehovah” in English.

One of the earliest recorded mythologies, featuring city-state patron deities:

  • Enlil: The supreme god of wind, earth, and storms [Lists of deities].

Egyptian gods often combined animal and human traits and evolved based on the ruling capital:

  • Osiris: The lord of the dead and the afterlife [Lists of deities].
  • Isis: The goddess of magic, motherhood, and healing.

The Romans adapted many Greek deities but gave them new names and often shifted their domains to be more militaristic and state-focused [Gods and goddesses of the Greek and Roman pantheon, Lists of deities]:

  • Jupiter: The Roman equivalent of Zeus, king of the gods [Gods and goddesses of the Greek and Roman pantheon].
  • Mars: The god of war (more prominent in Rome than his Greek equivalent, Ares).
