The “recovery of Gilgamesh” refers to the piecemeal recovery of the world’s oldest epic poem from ancient, broken clay tablets, and the modern repatriation of high-profile looted artifacts, such as the 3,500-year-old Gilgamesh Dream Tablet, which was seized and officially returned to Iraq. 

The recovery and piecing together of The Epic of Gilgamesh spans two major historical phases: 

  • 19th Century Archaeological Discovery: Beginning in the 1850s, thousands of shattered cuneiform tablets were excavated from the library of Assyrian King Assur-bani-pal in Nineveh. In the 1870s, self-taught scholar George Smith made world headlines by translating a broken tablet that contained a story of a great flood, essentially piecing together the lost epic. 
  • 20th & 21st Century Repatriation: The Gilgamesh Dream Tablet—a rare fragment featuring a Sumerian poem of the king’s dream about his companion, Enkidu—was looted from an Iraqi museum during the 1991 Gulf War. It was smuggled, sold with fake documentation, and purchased for the Museum of the Bible in 2014. Following an investigation by US authorities, the US Department of Justice seized the artifact and formally returned it to Iraq.

The Core Regions

NEOM is divided into several specialized regions, though some of the original, staggering blueprints have been heavily scaled back due to cost overruns and financial realities: 

  • The Line: The crown jewel of the project, originally planned as a 170-kilometer-long, 500-meter-high mirrored skyscraper stretching through the desert. Initial projections have been substantially downscaled, with a smaller fraction now slated for completion by 2030. 
  • Oxagon: Envisioned as a massive, floating industrial complex and global trade hub. It is designed to act as an advanced, technology-driven manufacturing and logistics center. 
  • Trojena: A year-round mountain and eco-tourism destination. Unlike other parts of the development, construction here has moved ahead at a fast pace, with plans to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games. 
  • Sindalah: A luxury island and marine tourist destination located on the Red Sea. 

Key Objectives & Progress

  • Green Energy: NEOM is a major hub for renewable energy innovation, notably the NEOM Green Hydrogen Project. This $8.4+ billion facility is the world’s largest commercial-scale hydrogen plant powered entirely by wind and solar, aimed at producing clean energy and ammonia for export. 
  • Economic Diversification: The broader goal is to attract global foreign direct investment, establish a tech-centric economy, and build a world-class tourism industry. 

Controversies

The project has faced widespread criticism on multiple fronts. Human rights organizations have reported the forceful eviction and displacement of the indigenous Huwaitat tribe to clear land for construction, with some locals facing imprisonment or death for resisting. Furthermore, environmental organizations have raised concerns about the destruction of local natural habitats, and economists have questioned the financial feasibility of the unprecedented multi-trillion-dollar price tag. 

According to Judeo-Christian theology, the resurrection of King David will not be a private or subtle event. Recognizing his return would involve observing specific, globally recognized milestones, such as his return to the Middle East to rule over a restored Israel, and his subordinate service to the Messiah. 

Expectations for recognizing King David’s resurrection include:

  • Return to the Holy Land: Biblical prophecies in the Old Testament explicitly state that David will be resurrected to physical life and will rule as a prince or king over a reunited Israel and Judah. 
  • Servitude to the Messiah: In prophetic passages (such as Ezekiel 34:23-24 and Jeremiah 30:9), David will rule as a shepherd-king but will be subject to the ultimate rule of Jesus Christ. 
  • General Resurrection of the Saints: According to Daniel 7:27 and broader eschatological consensus, David is categorized among the Old Testament saints who will be resurrected at the beginning of the Messianic era. 

Historically, verses like Acts 2:29-34 point out that David died, saw corruption in the tomb, and has not yet ascended to heaven, meaning his return corresponds directly with the end of days and the establishment of a literal Millennial kingdom.

Project NEOM is a massive, futuristic mega-project in Saudi Arabia’s Tabuk province, launched in 2017 by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Powered entirely by renewable energy, it is a centerpiece of the country’s “Vision 2030” initiative designed to transition the economy away from its dependence on oil.
