This one time at band camp two assholes beat me up but before that two asshopes asked why I shake so much #combatdivers #deepdivers Decompression sickness (#DCS), or “#thebends,” is a potentially life-threatening condition caused by nitrogen bubbles forming in tissues and blood due to rapid pressure reduction, commonly during fast ascents in diving or altitude changes. Symptoms include joint pain, skin rashes, dizziness, fatigue, and, in severe cases, paralysis or death. It is treated with high-flow oxygen and hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
What Causes Decompression Sickness
Rapid Ascent: The primary cause is rising too quickly from a dive or rapid depressurization, preventing the body from safely releasing absorbed nitrogen.
Inert Gas Bubbles: Under pressure, gases (mainly nitrogen) dissolve into body tissues. A quick drop in pressure forces these gases out of solution, forming bubbles.
Risk Factors: Deep diving, long dive times, repetitive dives, flying too soon after diving, dehydration, and cold water.

Symptoms of Decompression Sickness
Symptoms often appear within 15 minutes to 12 hours after surfacing.

Mild (Type I): Muscle and joint pain (often in knees or elbows), skin rash/itching (cutis marmorata), fatigue, and malaise.
Severe (Type II): Neurological issues (numbness, tingling, paralysis), vertigo, respiratory distress (“the chokes”), shock, and unconsciousness.
Treatment and Long-Term Effects
Treatment: Immediate administration of 100% oxygen and rapid transport to a medical facility for hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which shrinks bubbles and forces them back into solution.
Long-Term Effects: While most recover, severe cases can lead to chronic joint pain, neurological damage (paralysis, cognitive impairment), and in rare, severe cases of bone damage, dysbaric osteonecrosis.

Prevention
Safe practices include adhering to dive computer limits, making slow, controlled ascents, performing safety stops, and staying well-hydrated. @surfman374 #davidmichaelramsey #5minbreathhold #200ftfreediver #bigfishonly #bloodydecksspearfishingteam #saltysoulspearfishing rigsreefclassicspearfishing.com founder creator blogger diver
