TrackingPoint rifles are

a series of Precision Guided Firearms (PGFs) that use an integrated computer, a tracking scope, and a guided trigger to ensure high hit probability at extreme distances. The technology accounts for numerous ballistic variables, allowing even novice shooters to make shots that would otherwise require expert skill.

Technology and Features

The core of the TrackingPoint system is a suite of integrated technologies that automate many aspects of long-range shooting.

  • Networked Tracking Scope: This digital scope serves as the central computer, tracking the target, calculating the firing solution, and providing a head-up display (HUD) with critical information such as range, wind input, and cant.
  • Guided Trigger: The trigger is electronically linked to the scope’s computer and will only release the firing pin when the reticle is perfectly aligned with the “tagged” target impact point. This eliminates human error like trigger jerk.
  • Barrel Reference System: A fixed reference point ensures the system maintains its zero and makes precise adjustments over time.
  • Ballistics Calculator: The integrated computer accounts for over 20 variables in real-time, including range, temperature, barometric pressure, inclination, and target velocity.
  • Connectivity and Recording: The scope includes a Wi-Fi server that streams the view to a mobile device or wearable glasses (like the ShotGlass), allowing for unique shooting positions (e.g., around corners) and recording video or images of the hunt.

Notable Models

TrackingPoint has produced several rifle models over the years, in both bolt-action and semi-automatic configurations.

  • TrackingPoint XS1: A tactical-style bolt-action rifle chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum with a 27″ barrel, effective up to 1,200 yards.
  • TrackingPoint XS2 / XS3: Smaller bolt-action options chambered in .300 Win. Mag with effective ranges up to 1,000 yards and 750 yards, respectively.
  • TrackingPoint AR Series: Semi-automatic rifles available in calibers like 5.56 NATO, 7.62 NATO, and .300 Blackout, designed for shorter-to-mid-range engagements (up to 750 yards).
  • TrackingPoint M1400: A squad-level bolt-action rifle chambered in .338 Lapua Magnum with a maximum range of 1,400 yards.

Current Status

Talon Precision Optics acquired TrackingPoint in November 2018, and continues to develop and sell smart optics technology. While the company previously faced financial difficulties and stopped accepting orders at one point, the technology and products are still available through the new entity.
