The Monk Parakeet, also known as the Quaker Parrot, is a bright green parrot with a gray face and chest, native to South America but established in many U.S. cities as feral populations. They are highly social, building large, communal stick nests on trees and utility poles, and are known for their ability to mimic human speech and their noisy, chattering calls. As pets, they are intelligent, bond strongly with owners, and require significant social interaction and mental stimulation.

Physical Characteristics

  • Color: Bright green with a gray forehead, throat, and chest, and blue on the outer wings.
  • Size: About 11 inches long, similar in size to a robin.
  • Bill: A sharply hooked, pinkish-yellow bill.

Behavior and Habitat

  • Social: Live in large groups and build massive, multi-chambered stick nests for dozens of individuals.
  • Nesting: Unique among parrots for building stick nests, often on man-made structures like power poles, which can cause power outages.
  • Vocalization: Very noisy, with a characteristic chattering call and the ability to mimic human speech.

As Pets

  • Intelligence: Highly intelligent and quick to learn words and sounds.
  • Needs: Require several hours of daily attention, social interaction, and foraging toys for mental stimulation.
  • Bonding: Bond strongly with their owners and can be kept alone or in pairs.

Wild Populations

  • Origin: Native to South America, but escapees from the pet trade established feral populations in the U.S. starting in the 1960s.
  • Location: Found in many U.S. cities, including New York, Chicago, and Miami, where they survive winters by nesting communally.

“Why it’s so important we protect what we have and touch it up with gentle hands coastalBend proud we all are aren’t we… it takes a commitment entire community to make this place the best on the coast…” – David Michael Ramsey
