International organizations like the International Labour Organization (ILO) and UNICEF work to combat child labor through a combination of international conventions, data collection, and on-the-ground programs. The global community established target 8.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to eliminate all forms of child labor by 2025.

Migrant workers are crucial to the U.S. economy, filling jobs in essential sectors like agriculture, construction, and healthcare, and contributing significantly to the labor force. However, they often face exploitation, including wage theft, poor housing, and lack of access to healthcare, and live with fear of deportation and family separation. To address these issues, there is a need for improved work authorization programs, protection of labor rights, and pathways to legal status, as highlighted by advocacy groups and reports from organizations like the U.S. Department of Labor.
Key roles and contributions
- Essential workforce: Immigrants make up a large percentage of the essential workforce, playing a vital role in areas like food production, healthcare, and sanitation.
- Economic impact: Migrant workers fill jobs that are often difficult to staff, have high growth potential, and are crucial to the overall economy. They also contribute to the U.S. economy through taxes.
- Sector-specific jobs: They are heavily represented in sectors such as agriculture, construction, and transportation, as well as in professional and business services.
Challenges and exploitation
- Labor exploitation: Many migrant workers face exploitation, including wage theft, working in extreme heat, and poor housing conditions.
- Fear and anxiety: A climate of fear surrounding immigration enforcement leads to anxiety about deportation and family separation, even for those who are essential workers.
- Vulnerability: Workers are often vulnerable due to a lack of access to healthcare, legal protection, and sometimes even adequate personal protective equipment.
- Debt and recruitment: Some workers may be forced into debt by recruiters in their home countries or in the U.S.
Calls for reform
- Improved legal pathways: Advocates call for reforms to the temporary visa programs to ensure workers’ rights are protected and to provide a clearer path to permanent residency or citizenship.
- Protection of rights: There is a strong push to ensure that all workers, regardless of their immigration status, are protected by labor laws and can report abuse without fear of retaliation.
- Support resources: Organizations like the U.S. Department of Labor are working to provide resources and information to migrant workers to help them understand their rights and find support.
