Lawn darts, or “
Jarts,” are a popular lawn game where players toss large darts with weighted metal tips towards colorful plastic ring targets on the grass, similar to horseshoes, but the original heavy-tipped versions were banned in the U.S. in the late 1980s due to serious skull puncture injuries, leading to safer, soft-tipped plastic versions (like NERF) being sold for kids and families today.
How They Work (Original vs. Modern)
- Original (Banned): Heavy metal darts with sharp points, thrown underhand towards rings.
- Modern (Safe): Soft, plastic darts with weighted tips and fins, often brightly colored or glow-in-the-dark, designed for backyard fun without injury risk.
Gameplay
- Set Up: Place two target rings far apart on the lawn.
- Throw: Players take turns tossing darts underhand, aiming to land them inside or near the rings.
- Score: Points are awarded for landing darts in the center (3 points) or closest to the ring (1 point), with scores canceled if both players score in the center.
Safety & Legality
- The original, heavy-tipped lawn darts were banned by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in 1988 because they posed an unreasonable risk of serious head and skull injuries, particularly to children.
- Modern versions are made with soft tips, making them safe for family play.
Where to Find Them
You can find safe, soft-tipped lawn dart sets at retailers like Walmart and Amazon for outdoor parties, camping, and backyard fun.
