Inuit funeral practices 

blend traditional beliefs in the soul’s journey after death with modern influences, primarily Christianity. Traditional customs often involved rock cairn burials and placing personal belongings with the deceased, while modern services usually take place in churches and cemeteries. 

Traditional Practices

Traditional Inuit beliefs centered on the concept that everything possesses a soul (anirniq), which endures after death. The soul’s destination in the afterlife was determined by their moral behavior and the manner of their death. 

• Burial Method: Due to the permafrost, digging graves was often impossible. The deceased were commonly wrapped in a sealskin or animal skin shroud and placed in an open-air grave or a natural cavern, which was then covered with a pile of stones to form a cairn.
• Grave Goods: Personal items were placed with the body for use in the afterlife. For men, these might include hunting or fishing implements, and for women, sewing tools.
• Purification: The deceased’s house was emptied, cleaned, and fumigated to purify it. The body was not carried out through the main door but rather a new opening or the back of the tent, and the opening sealed.
• Mourning and Taboos: A mourning period of five days was common, during which the name of the deceased would not be pronounced until it was given to an unborn child. 

Contemporary Practices

With the widespread conversion to Christianity, many Inuit communities have adopted modern Christian funeral rites and cemetery burials. 

• Funeral Services: Services are often held in local churches, led by a priest or lay reader, and include scripture readings, hymns, and prayers.
• Community Involvement: Funerals are major community events, often attended by most villagers, and businesses may close for the duration. Attendees can offer condolences, share eulogies, and place flowers (often artificial) on the coffin.
• Cemetery Burial: Modern cemeteries are used, and while ground conditions can still be a challenge, methods have adapted.
• Blended Beliefs: Many contemporary Inuit blend traditional and Christian views. For instance, the traditional idea that the deceased’s name or soul could act as a guardian spirit is sometimes incorporated into modern naming practices for children. 

While the practicalities and religious ceremonies have changed significantly, the core cultural emphasis on respect for the deceased’s soul and the importance of community support during grief remains central to Inuit funerals.
