Mafia Hits

 “mafia hits” commonly refers to

contract killings carried out by members of organized crime syndicates, the title of several true-crime books on mob history, or the name of musical albums by hip hop artists such as Three 6 Mafia and Capone.

In Organized Crime

In the context of organized crime, a “hit” or “contract killing” is an assassination, often a targeted murder, carried out by a professional hitman on behalf of a crime organization. These hits are typically ordered to eliminate rivals, silence informants, or enforce discipline within the organization.

Notable historical examples of mafia hits include the murders of prominent figures such as:

  • Carmine Galante: The boss of the Bonanno crime family, who was shot to death while eating lunch on July 22, 1979, in Brooklyn.
  • Albert Anastasia: A co-founder of Murder, Inc. and later the boss of the Mangano crime family, who was killed in a barbershop in 1957.
  • Paul Castellano: The head of the Gambino crime family, gunned down in front of Sparks Steak House in Manhattan in December 1985.
  • Bugsy Siegel: A notorious gangster involved in bootlegging and gambling, whose 1947 murder in Beverly Hills remains one of the most famous unsolved mob killings.
  • Joe Masseria: A powerful mob boss during the Castellammarese War, who was betrayed by his ally Lucky Luciano and killed in 1931.
