Texas military operations are primarily focused on border security through 

Operation Lone Star, which involves deploying the Texas National Guard and Texas Tactical Border Force to collaborate with the U.S. Border Patrol to stop illegal immigration and criminal activity. Other operations include supporting state-level emergencies through the Texas State Guard, which provides civil defense, and participating in federal military exercises. 

Border security

  • Operation Lone Star: A multi-agency effort to secure the Texas-Mexico border.
    • Mission: To assist federal law enforcement in stopping illegal crossings, preventing smuggling, and dismantling criminal operations.
    • Personnel: Includes the Texas National Guard and the Texas Tactical Border Force, which is equipped with enhanced technology and rapid response teams.
    • Accomplishments: Led to hundreds of thousands of apprehensions, numerous criminal arrests, and seizures of drugs like fentanyl.
  • Joint Task Force-Southern Border: A Department of Defense operation that works with federal, state, and local partners to deter unlawful activity on the southern border. 

State and civil support

  • Texas State Guard: The state’s military reserve force that responds to state emergencies.
    • Mission: Provides first response and civil defense during disasters and emergencies, such as Hurricane Harvey.
    • Support: Organizes medical support, assists the Texas National Guard, and participates in various state operations. 

Other operations

  • Federal support: The Texas Military Department provides support for federal missions, including deploying troops on federal orders for specific tasks.
  • State-wide support: This includes providing support for military ceremonies, funeral support, and assisting with state-level exercises like the Department of Defense Interface Communications Exercise (DICE).
  • Joint Base San Antonio: A major military installation that houses multiple commands and provides training for basic and technical skills.
