In the Bible, “Watchers” can refer to either holy angels sent to carry out God’s judgment or, more extensively in non-canonical texts like the Book of Enoch, a group of fallen angels who rebelled by having children with human women. While the canonical Bible only mentions “watchers” in the Book of Daniel in the context of holy angels, extra-biblical traditions like the Book of Enoch provide a detailed narrative about the fallen Watchers, known as the Grigori, whose offspring were the Nephilim.
Holy Watchers
- Role: In Daniel 4, a “watcher” is a holy angel sent by God to deliver a message of judgment to King Nebuchadnezzar.
- Significance: Their presence signifies God’s sovereignty over earthly rulers and the heavenly beings who monitor and execute divine will.
Fallen Watchers (Grigori)
- Origin: According to the Book of Enoch, a group of angels called Watchers (or the Grigori) descended to Earth and became lustful for human women.
- Rebellion: They abandoned their heavenly duties, took human women as wives, and taught humans forbidden knowledge, such as sorcery, metalworking, and cosmetics.
- Offspring: They fathered the Nephilim, who are described as a race of giants that brought violence and corruption to the Earth.
- Judgment: Their actions led to widespread evil, which ultimately led to God’s judgment, culminating in the Great Flood during the time of Noah.
angels are involved in several key events, including
gathering the elect for Christ’s return, executing judgment through trumpet blasts and pouring out bowls of wrath, and binding Satan after Christ’s return. They also play roles such as holding back the winds of judgmentuntil God’s timing is right and in separating the wicked from the righteous.
Angels’ roles in the end times
- Gathering the elect: Angels will send out a loud trumpet call to gather God’s chosen from all over the earth to meet Christ.
- Executing judgment:
- Seven angels will sound trumpets to announce periods of judgment.
- Other angels are depicted as pouring out bowls of God’s judgment on the earth.
- After Christ’s return, angels will separate the wicked from the righteous.
- Binding Satan: An angel will bind Satan with a great chain and lock him in a pit for a thousand years after Christ’s second coming.
- Restraining judgment: Four angels will hold back the four winds of the earth, preventing judgment from being unleashed until God’s appointed time.
- Signaling the harvest: Angels will cry out to one another when the “harvest of the earth” is ripe, signaling it’s time to reap.
- Worshipping God: Angels will continue to worship God in heaven, numbering in the millions, as a sign of the last days and a call for believers to focus on Jesus.
