LONG Range Aids To Navigation “Loran” can refer to several things, most commonly Long Range Navigation, a hyperbolic radio navigation system, or the Loran Award, a Canadian scholarship for post-secondary students. It can also refer to various people, such as the fictional character Loran Cehack from Turn A Gundam or the actress Berta Loran. The term has also been used for a needle threader and a community in Illinois.
Navigation system (LORAN)
What it is: A now largely obsolete radio navigation system that used radio signals from pairs of ground stations to help ships and aircraft determine their location.
How it worked: It relied on the time difference between signals received from multiple stations to calculate position, a technique called multilateration.
Status: The original system was phased out in favor of GPS, but the technology is being explored as an alternative for GPS in the form of Enhanced LORAN (eLORAN).
